How to send your grocery list to your mobile phone

In the last post, I published a video showing a Shop’NCook grocery list on my iPhone. There seems to be some confusion about this – somebody even sent his grocery list to my iPhone!

Anyway, in case you are wondering, you don’t need an iPhone – or a Blackberry, an Android or other smart phone – to get your grocery list on your phone.

Shop’NCook Pro comes with an e-mail feature that makes it really easy to send grocery lists to your phone. It isn’t either a new feature. Actually, it had this capability from the very beginning, – even when it wasn’t usual to read e-mails on mobile phones, – as I wrote Shop’NCook partly because I wanted to be able to send my grocery lists to my husband. But that’s another story…

Update 01-03-2013:
If you have an iPhone, you can now send your shopping list directly to Shop’NCook Lite app or to iShopNCook app by selecting “Upload to Direct Access” in the toolbar of the Shopping List panel.

So what do you need to have your grocery list on your mobile phone?

If your phone supports e-mails, it’s very easy. You just need to set up Shop’NCook to send e-mails to your phone.

If it doesn’t support e-mails but has Java (and chances are that it does), you can sign-up for a browser-based e-mail account like GMail, set up Shop’NCook to send the grocery lists to your new account and install Opera browser for mobiles to view your grocery lists.

In both cases, you get a practical shopping list with checkboxes that you can mark as you go.

Now, even if your phone does not support Java – or if it does, but installing Opera sounds a bit too complicated, – don’t despair! You can probably still have your grocery list sent to your mobile phone very easily. You see, most mobile carriers have a free “SMS gateway”, which takes e-mails and delivers them to your phone as SMS text messages. For example, if your carrier is AT&T, you send an e-mail to your-10-digit-phone-number@txt.att.net – now your have to replace your-10-digit-phone-number by your actual phone number – and receive it as SMS on your phone. Just ask your carrier for the e-mail address you should use (or check this list).

That’s it for sending grocery lists to your mobile phone. More to come soon on setting up Shop’NCook to send e-mails.

I don’t have gmail, I have hotmail. is there any way to be able to send to this account.

  2. Mathilde says:

    Wanda,
You should be able to. If you have a mobile phone that supports e-mails, try the settings here to get your e-mails on your phone. Otherwise, you can read them on Opera browser.

    Hi,

I am happy you sent this…I have 3 G I touch. I am excited to send an email of my grocery list, but would like to send the menu calendar to my phone also…the best would be to send the menu calendar to sync w/ my ICAL (which also syncs w/ google cal). I would love to click on the day and see what I planned for dinner that night to check that it still works w/ the ever changing kid schedule and leftovers in the refrigerator. Then I would like to walk in and see under the note portion of my ICAL event for that recipe: the prep instructions and ingredient list! That would be a perfect world.

Another app I would enjoy would take 1 portion of what is for dinner in your meal plan and sync the calories to my Ipod Touch program Lose It! This program is great to keep w/ you on the go during the day and log what you eat, but when it comes to adding 1 portion of a meal, it doesn’t do that.

Thanks so much for your thorough and wonderful food planning software! Happy New Year! Healthy New Year! Organized New Year! Good Food New Year!

    Sherry,

Thank you for the great suggestions!

You can already send actually your menu to the iPhone by e-mail. I will see what I can do to integrate it with iCal. Happy New Year to you too!

I have entered the information to email the shopping list. However, each time I click “send” the following message pops up: Error during message sending.” What can I do to fix this?

  6. Julie Gilbert says:

I, like Rebecca in # 5, get the error message ” error when sending” when I try to send my grocery list to my email. This did not used to happen – new problem. Help?!?!?

  7. Mathilde says:

If nothing else works, you can always send e-mails by creating a gmail account and using it in Shop’NCook. The following post shows how to do that:

Make sure you restart the software after modifying the settings though, or it may not work!

Rebuilding the index in Direct Access fails each and every time.
    How can I resolve this?

  9. Mathilde says:

    Kelly,

Can you try again? It think the server was overloaded. It should work now.

Hi there!! I havebeen using your program for about 4 months now and LOVE

  11. Colette says:

sorry!! LOVE IT!!! My only problem is that I can’t get the checkboxes to work when I email my grocery list to my phone. I have a gmail acct and a blackberry. the list comes through no problem but I can’t check the boxes. I can usually figure these things out but in this case…

  12. Mathilde says:

    Colette,

It is maybe related to the blackberry.

I am working on a web application that will allow you to get your list on any smart phone without requiring e-mail. That will allow you to check the boxes. I will announce it on the blog when it becomes available.

    Dear Mathilde,
I love being able to send the grocery list to my hubby’s I-Phone! However, sometimes I want to add items that are not part of the recipe (staples like coffee etc.). For now, I put them under comments, but my husband, the supernerd, wants to be able to have check boxes for these, too. How can I add non-recipe items to the shopping list that will also be listed with check boxes?
    Thanks!
